Michael Dempsey is the current trainer and selector of the Kilkenny senior hurling team. Dempsey, a native of Laois is a self confessed accidental hurling man. Previous to his Kilkenny move Dempsey was the manager of the Laois senior team. Dempsey’s success include winning a Leinster title with the Laois under 21’s in 1994 and also bringing the Carlow team O’ Hanrahan’s to Leinster club success. These victories made the Kilkenny hurling team sit up and take notice of Dempsey’s abilities.

Before he was appointed to the senior hurling team Dempsey was given position of club coach at the Kilkenny Football club side Muckalee, he then moved into hurling working with St. Martins Hurling team. before his promotion to the Kilkenny senior team Dempsey worked with the Under 21’s team.

Dempsey has had much success at the senior club under management of Brian Cody, in his time with the senior team he has helped them gain three All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships in a row. Dempsey is very comfortable in Cody’s Backroom team Dempsey once said “Brian Cody is brilliant, He just has the unique feel where the clubs fit into it, or where their personal lives fit into it — where it has to be serious and where you can afford to take your foot off the pedal. And he has huge experience as a player and obviously as a manager.

As a trainer Dempsey feels that one of the most important things is to instill self belief within the team, every member of the team. Dempsey once commented on his Kilkenny side saying, The team before them was winning, the one before that was winning, so they believe they can do it too, above all their self-belief is huge and that, sometimes, is enough to get you over the line.
